ELIXIR-UK announces new FAIR data stewardship training project
ELIXIR-UK have successfully secured funding for a new data steward training project as part of the UKRI Innovation Scholars: Data Science Training in Health and Bioscience call. This project is being led by the University of Bradford. ELIXIR-UK training coordinator Krzysztof Poterlowicz from the University of Bradford leads the project, with ELIXIR-UK’s data management lead Robert Andrews from Cardiff University as co-lead.
The strong knowledge and resource base that we have cultivated as ELIXIR-UK means that we have the expertise and resources required to offer innovative training in data stewardship to the UK research community. This is an area which is often overlooked but is becoming more and more critical to life science research as larger datasets are produced and need careful plans on how to be managed and shared. Data stewards can be isolated in organisations, so alongside training, this project also aims to foster community in this area to make the data stewardship community more interconnected and informed.
ELIXIR-UK already has a large volume of resources and training, such as the FAIR Cookbook and RDMKit, and we are also able to draw on the numerous experts who are part of ELIXIR-UK to help inform and write training materials for this project. This knowledge base will form the basis of our core Data Steward training, which will be delivered by professional trainers and available as ongoing resources online.
Alongside this, we are launching a new fellowship scheme, which will train an estimated cohort of 20 fellows over the course of the project. These fellows will deliver training that can be reused and utilised by universities and organisations across the UK. We are pleased to be working with the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI) to develop this new training fellowship, which will facilitate much-needed data steward training and community building across UK organisations. We hope to sustain this fellowship long-term, beyond the end of this project.
We are excited to announce more details of the project and the fellowship programme in the coming weeks and months. If you would like to be kept up to date with this and other ELIXIR-UK news, then please subscribe to our newsletter.
