From large-scale training to BYOD – extending Galaxy training in practice
In this session, we explore different approaches to bioinformatics training, from structured tutorials and large-scale delivery to supporting independent analysis from the Galaxy Training Network.
In the first talk, Delphine Larivière will discuss the challenges encountered in previous editions of the Galaxy Training Academy, the strategies developed to address them, and how the event continues to evolve as a global training effort built on the Galaxy Training Network (GTN). The Galaxy Training Academy is a week-long online training event that convenes thousands of trainees worldwide. It is a semi-asynchronous event that combines pre-recorded training materials with online support available around the clock. The programme covers dozens of Galaxy Training Network (GTN) tutorials across nine topic areas. Organising the event requires trainers, helpers and Galaxy administrators to coordinate across time zones in order to support participants throughout the week. Now in its third iteration, the Galaxy Training Academy continues to evolve as organisers refine how large-scale online training events are organised and supported.
In the second talk, Marisa Loach will focus on what comes after following tutorials. While the Galaxy Training Network (GTN) is a great way to get started in bioinformatics, it isn’t always easy to take the next step. Drawing on her BioFAIR fellowship, she is developing a series of online single-cell training workshops alongside a Bring Your Own Data (BYOD) event to support users as they begin analysing their own data.
Together, these talks highlight how different training formats – from GTN tutorials and global events like GTA to hands-on BYOD approaches – support researchers at different stages of their learning journey.
