CaSDaR – Opening up careers in data stewardship
Introducing the Careers and Skills for Data-driven Research Network (CaSDAR). Discover a new landscape of data stewardship in UK research.
Data stewardship is essential to ensuring that research data is well-managed, accessible, and reusable. It plays a critical role in connecting data creation with long-term value and impact. But despite growing recognition of its importance, the data stewardship profession remains fragmented. Many individuals are performing data stewardship tasks without formal titles, career pathways or institutional support.
The CaSDaR Network+ Project (Careers and Skills for Data-driven Research), launched in April 2025 with UKRI funding, is working to change this. The network is building an inclusive, sustainable community of data stewards across disciplines, while advocating for formal recognition of data stewardship roles in research-intensive institutions.
In this talk, Dr Samantha Pearman-Kanza, Principal Enterprise Fellow at the University of Southampton, will introduce the goals of CaSDaR, outline the role of data stewards in the broader research technical professional (RTP) landscape, and share the network’s plans for the next four years – including how you can get involved.
