Three stories, many lessons

Cultural frictions and practical realities in human research data projects

What happens when good intentions meet complex realities in research data practice?

In this talk, we’ll explore three real-world projects where cultural contexts, resource constraints, and mismatches between expectations and capacity created both challenges and unexpected synergies. For each case, we’ll unpack the initial goals, the limitations faced, and the practical tips and workarounds that emerged – highlighting moments of alignment as well as tension between data science ideals, research goals and feasibility of implementation.

Rather than offering one-size-fits-all solutions, this session aims to spark an open discussion:

  • What would you have done differently?
  • What resonates with your own experience?
  • And how can we collectively move toward more context-aware, feasible, and culturally sensitive data practices?
